HELLO, I'M

Health and Society Student
About
MY BACKGROUND
Hi everyone! My name is Cammy Rutley-Kreis, and I am currently a junior Health and Society student at the University of Texas at Austin, pursuing a pre-health certificate and the goal of medical school. I love reading, walking dogs, moving my body, and spending time with my family. I am extremely passionate about serving others; when I think about my goal of becoming a doctor I am overwhelmed with feelings of hope and gratitude to be in this position. I understand the significance of a good doctor’s presence on a patient’s physical, emotional, and mental health, and I desire to help people in those ways; the way I have been helped. I love working with children, and I hope to pursue pediatrics.

Healthcare Experience
WHAT I'VE DONE & STRIVE TO DO
Overall, I personally have had a pretty positive outlook on the healthcare system as a patient. I always felt very safe in hospital settings; very supported and thoughtfully considered. I understand that I am lucky to not have to worry about the financial implications of medical care growing up. My experience was memorable because my nurses and doctors took such thorough care of me, comforted me the way I wished my mom was there to do, and listened to me as I explained what was wrong. It turned out I had COVID and had to isolate myself in my dorm for a week. Being sick and exhausted and alone and emotional, I just started bawling in the exam room. They took such good care of my emotions. It definitely shaped my perception of healthcare because I understood how scary it can be to be a patient, and how significant the healthcare provider’s presence can be on their wellbeing mentally and emotionally.

My Passion
Ever since I was a little kid, I loved going to the hospital. I wanted to know everything about it. I knew deep within me that there was nothing more powerful than knowledge. No one can ever take that knowledge from you; it will always be there. And knowledge that can save a life? There was nothing that mattered more to me. I didn’t understand how that information could be out there and not everyone wanted to absorb all of it the way I knew I did. I needed to know how to heal. And today, when I walk into the hospital, I don’t feel intimidated–I feel a sense of curiosity and comfort that radiates from somewhere deep within me.
